DuPont and Techni-Clean® Australia win tender to protect the Westlink M7 in Sydney.

The Westlink M7 is a 40km motorway linking the M2, M4 and M5 motorways in Sydney's western suburbs. When fully constructed, Westlink M7 will have 144 bridges, eliminating 56 sets of traffic lights and cutting travel times across western Sydney by up to an hour.

In early 2003, the Westlink Motorway Limited consortium entered an agreement with the NSW Roads & Traffic Authority to finance, design, construct, operate and maintain the Westlink M7. The consortium will operate Westlink M7 for a total of 34 years, after which time it will be transferred back to Government ownership. The Abigroup Leighton Joint Venture (ALJV) is responsible for the design and construction of the Westlink M7.

Problem:

Faced with significant ongoing costs associated with the removal of graffiti, dirt and pollution over a 34 year operational period, ALJV invited tenders for the protection of the M7 roadway including retaining wall surfaces, bridges and column cladding. They were looking for a high quality solution that offered both water sealant and oil repellent properties.

Solution:

To meet the ALJV specification, DuPont developed a new Concrete Sealer/Stain Repeller, the HZ-2004, which required only single stage application. DuPont, in partnership with Approved Applicators, Techni-Clean® Australia, subsequently submitted a tender for the HZ-2004 in combination with the EZ Graffiti Remover Gel.

Results:

With most other products not being able to offer protection against both water and oil in a single stage application, the tender from DuPont and Techni-Clean® Australia was successful. DuPont and Techni-Clean® Australia are currently working with ALJV to protect the early stages of the Westlink M7 with HZ-2004. After opening to traffic at the end of 2006, the EZ Graffiti Remover Gel will be used to remove graffiti and maintain the roadway appearance.
