Problem:

Aluminium has become a leading boat manufacturing material due to its strength combined with light weight. However, subject to the harsh environment of salt water, bare aluminium is prone to oxidising in a very short time. Oxidising accelerates decay, both reducing the physical appearance of the proud owner's boat and making it more difficult to clean. Whilst several clear coating products were available to limit decay none had proven satisfactory due to limited durability.

Solution:

Working at the forefront of the EZ Clear technology in the marine industry, DuPont's distributor in New Zealand, Resene Automotive & Performance Coatings, was very aware of the oxidising problems faced by McLay Boats. Resene suggested McLay try an Imron® EZ Clear coating which would offer both a quality and durable finish.

Results:

McLay Boats found that DuPont's Teflon®-based EZ Clear coatings offered several functional advantages that could be passed onto the customer. These included long-lasting gloss, chemical resistance, high durability and Teflon®. With Teflon® properties McLay was able to manufacture an Easy-to-Clean boat that required minimal maintenance and offered increased convenience for the owner. And in addition, the High Solids content of the EZ Clear, allowed McLay to maintain high quality whilst achieving the labour savings and production efficiencies associated with a one-coat application.
