Problem:
Large concrete mixing companies typically use corrosive acid based wash systems to clean the cement films and road grime building up on the paintwork. The application of the acidic wash takes considerable time and weathers paint finishes and logos leaving them marked and dull in a matter of months. This wash also causes considerable damage by corroding components including chasis, seals, bearings and hoses.
Solution:
Recently DuPont's distributor in NZ approached Holcim Cement, a large concrete mixing company in NZ, to offer a solution to this problem. Resene Automotive & Performance Coatings recommended a DuPont Teflon® based coating, Imron® EZ Clear. The coating was initially put on a trial to see how well the vehicle paintwork could be protected from the corrosive affects of the acid wash and usual wear. One of the main objectives of the trial was to lift the appearance of vehicles delivering product to customers and onsite reduce cleaning times for the operators. Due to early success the trials were broadened to include cement tanks.
Results:
One of the drivers best described the result when he commented during a staff meeting "the vehicle practically washes itself" and this has had the double benefit of both keeping up the appearance of our fleet as well as reducing man hours spent repeatedly washing the vehicles. Holcim found that the gloss retention is superb and that the previous build-up of cement and road film is minimal. What little grime adhering to the paintwork washed off easily requiring no special effort.
"I endorse the product success to date and see no reason for this to change and would be pleased to recommend its application for protecting paintwork finishes on vehicles and other painted items both within our company and to others interested." Sam Vellenoweth, Production Manager, Holcim Cement
